This talk proposes criteria for demarcating software patentability by characterizing computation (machine "thinking") as comprised of the following:
• Message sending
• Message receiving
• Message receiver creation
• Message processing (including how to process future messages)
The above criteria are used to analyze existing patents and are proposed as a "bright red line" for software patentability.
To address the above issues, SUPA (Software UnPatentability Alliance) is being organized to work for the abolition of software patentability. As an alternative, use of copyright is discussed for software IP protection and licensing.
